ALTAR CALLS?

ON ALTAR CALLS

Responding to this:
"With all sincerity..., do you believe people get saved through Altar Calls?... I attend a church where Altar Calls was not a practice."
Altar Call does not guarantee salvation. It is perhaps an activity adopted in some Christian gathering to mark a sinner's U-turn from the life of sin to Godliness.

However, it is important we understand that before anyone responds to an Altar Call, he/she must have been inspired or touched by the sermon and prompted by the Spirit of God to surrender to JESUS, anything outside this is a mere fluke and not a product of Godly sorrow (2 Corinthians 7:10).

We may draw some light from the immediate evangelistic harvest that attended the apostolic ministry of Peter following the Pentecostal experience in the upper room of Jerusalem. The Bible records that  "... the multitude came together..."(Acts 2:6); probably out of curiosity, astonishment and criticism which would result in mockery and acquisition of drunkenness(Acts 2:13).

These was a prelude to Peter's powerful and soul-transforming sermon on the same day, while concluding this pentecostal sermon, Peter called the multitude to repentance - "...Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins..." (Acts 2:38). It is instructive that out of the multitude, three thousand souls were added to God's family. This appears similar to what is popularly called Altar Call in some Christian centres today.

Permit me to submit that
the statistics of the saved out of the multitude might not have been ascertained without a conscious and physical effort to separate and identify the newly born babes on that occasion (1 Peter 2:2). Altar calls may just be a necessary tool to identify decisions for Christ and on the long run, to help their growth in Christ.

Nevertheless, in recent times people purposelessly respond to altar calls and essentially will not endeavour to build up there newly found faith.

Let me add, Altar Calls is not be a commandment from God for the salvation of sinners, but it is a method adopted to know those who are deciding for Christ after an encounter during christian programme so that they may be identified for discipleship. So, that it is not a practice in a particular denomination does not make it wrong or imperfect.

At the same time, your response to Altar Calls without tangible spiritual transformation does not spell its ineffectiveness. Beloved, whichever method adopted, the most important thing is to make the decision and determine to stand by your decision in following the Lord at all cost, depending on His Grace (2 Corinthians 12:9; Luke 9:62).

You see, you must be determined to have a change of life, make the decision to  turn away from your every sin. Don't forget, your determination leads to your separation from the world and it sinfulness- 2 Corinthians 6:17 "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you... "

Jesus still saves, cleanses, heals and fills with the Holy Spirit today, just surrender to Him as the Lord of your life.

"...if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart...thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation" (Romans 10:9,10).
