DIVORCE

The increasing rate of marital separation in our society has become a matter of concern in Christian circles. Church leaders are getting wearied of the frequency of marital issues on their counsel row. Our courts now attend to cases of marital dissolution than ever. Scarcely will you read a newspaper without coming across cases of divorce. The currency of this happening in our world has grown a sentiment of, "if your marriage refuses to work, break it!". This is very far from God's precept on marriage and family life. "Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." (Matthew 19:6)

I remembered vividly a couple of weeks ago, I met a woman with a court clerk who came across my way demanding to see a colleague of mine who happened to be her husband (I never met her until then). The visit was to deliver a court notice for a divorce suit. Since, I knew little or nothing about the whole matter, I could only give scriptural counsel, "I really don't know what you have and had been through in your marriage but I learnt in scriptures that divorce is not an option with God because God hates divorce [paraphrased]." Malachi 2:16 points this out expressly, "For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away[divorce]..."

The court clerk who accompanied her suddenly became uncomfortable with my words that he stood up thanking me for my rather unwarranted contribution (I may be wrong). The woman who appeared attentive to my talks had no choice than to stand up and move with him. I felt unsatisfied, interacted with the husband later and resorted to praying for the restoration of that marriage. God save our homes from the storms of divorce.

Just as it is in marriage, it happens spiritually. Let's consider IITimothy  4:10 "For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed..." What else is this than Divorce? Several people profess Christianity but have divorced Christ because of worldly pleasures and the love for it just like Demas. What they have left is just mere confession without connection to Jesus Christ- The bridegroom.

Beloved, are you still connected to Jesus as it was when you first surrendered and gave your life to Him or you have divorced Him from your heart and life?

If you are still connected to Him, may you receive abundant grace to continue in Him to the end. If you have divorced Him, you still have the privilege of this particular time to reconcile with Him and get reconnected.

What do you have left of your relationship with God, is it mere Christian confession without connection or a growing connection with Christ?

Don't divorce Christ, for He hates DIVORCE.
