HANDLING DISTRACTIONS
Sometimes, distractions are closer to us than our minds. We may not just be able to avoid it for they are active and readily present features of our worlds. Whatever draws or diverts your attention from what should be your central focus, purpose and goal in life is a distraction. Nothing hinders and limits us from looking to Jesus than distractions such as pains, disappointments, sufferings, lacks, afflictions and oppressions of the devil; the list could go endless but certainly not without identifying the distractions of deceits, temptations to sin and worldly pleasures.
More often, distractions arises from the external environment and gets settled on the mind, at this point shunning or disregarding it might take serious self-discipline or a help beyond self; here, I mean a divine assistance to still remain focused despite the clouds of distractions around. I must let you know looking to JESUS will help.
Beloved, in fairness and sincerity, distractions are almost impossible to avoid these days of ours, so instead of telling you how to avoid distractions, are there? I will rather share with you how you can handle or deal with distractions to still keep your gaze on JESUS.
Get Busy: Try to engage yourself with productive things, such as Reading the Bible, spiritual and motivational books, practising a religious secret place relationship with God and telling people about the love of Christ if you have experienced it. You can also lend a helping hand to people who need your help. It keeps you happy, joyful and active. Don’t forget, an idle hand is the devils tool. Beloved, “Whatsoever thy hand finds to do, do it with thy might…”(Ecclesiastes 9:10).
Give God your heart and mind: Are you still being delayed, deceived and distracted from God and have not given all to the Lord Jesus particularly your life, you need to! When you do, He will occupy your heart and mind. He loves to rule from your heart and if you desire that too, you will just have to formally and sincerely make Jesus your Lord and Saviour, then He begins to reign in and through you as His true child. Dear friend, “… incline your heart unto the lord God…” (Joshua 24:23).
Guide your heart: You must have seen, heard or read this before, guide your heart with all diligence; for out of it are issues of life (Proverbs 4:23). By this you are to keep, protect and secure our hearts from entertaining evil imaginations, unholy thoughts of unrighteousness and evils.
Forget your past: Whatever appear unforgettable, unforgiving and painful episodes of your past should be forgotten. A truth you must know is that everyone, including the people you admire greatly has a past. Forgetting your past is a healing for your present. You must forget your past to remember God the new Lord of your heart and life. You see, “…this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before”(Philippians 3:13).
Forgive yourself and your offenders: Don't be shocked, you need to forgive yourself where you faulted, pained or disappointed yourself. You may not be able to avoid offences but overlooking offenses and forgiving offenders will always be within your reach. Beloved, we must develop a posture of being difficult to offend. You might have wanted to ask, “…how oft shall my brother [neighbour, spouse, friend, boss…] sin against me, and I forgive him? Till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, until seven times: but, until seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22-23).
Look up!: When you cultivate the habit of looking up, just like I have been hanging on Grace to do more these day, you will find Him engaging your heart and mind with His will and purpose for your life. “Looking unto Jesus the author and the finisher of our faith; who for joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2).
Treasured friend, JESUS will always help you with handling distractions only if you will look, fix and focus your gaze on Him.
As you focus your gaze on Jesus, I trust the Holy Spirit to open you up to more effective and profiting ways of dealing with distractions beyond those stated.
Remain Grace-full and keep focus on JESUS.
